A laptop computer is an expensive piece of equipment and thieves love them. Over a million laptops are reported lost or stolen every year. What's even more distressing is that according to the FBI, less than 2 percent of them are ever recovered. And while the loss of this valuable equipment is bad enough, consider the likelihood that the owners of these stolen computers may be even more distressed about the loss of their stored data. Many times, the data residing on the stolen laptop proves to be even more valuable to its owner than the laptop itself. Wouldn't it be great if there was some way you could track your stolen laptop much like you can track a stolen vehicle these days? After all, there's equipment such as LoJack and services like OnStar you can either buy or elect to have installed as a factory option onto a new car. These anti-theft products and services can pinpoint an automobile's location so that law enforcement agencies can move in, make arrests and recover your stolen property. If you fear the loss of your mobile computer and you want to do something to catch a thief, there is an anti-theft and tracking product you can buy. nTracker, from Synet is a new anti-theft laptop tracking, recovery and data protection system that you can install on any mobile computer running Windows.
?Spyware' is a term that refers to a very wide category of malicious software that has been intentionally designed to intercept or take partial control of a computer's operation without the consent of that computer's owner or lawful user. When the term ?Spyware' is taken in a literal sense, it suggests that the software clandestinely monitors the activities of the user operating the computer, however, it has over the years, come to be known as software that hampers the operating systems efficient functioning for the benefit of a third party, usually the person who created the Spyware. By downloading onto a system the Spyware will also make entries in the system registry. While it is imperative to remove the Spyware from the computer it is as imperative to remove all traces from the registry as well. This can be achieved with the help of some anti-Spyware and Adware removal utility such as Spyware removal tool.

How Does It Affect The Computer?
?Spyware' is candid software that downloads itself onto a person's computer and constantly operates in the background and collects personal information of the user. For instance, it will record the entry from the keyboard every time the user enters a username and password or credit card details. The Spyware will monitor and record the information as well as which site the username and password was entered into. It will then mail this information to the host computer that the Spyware came from. In order to do this the Spyware must take over some processor time. It does this by delaying the operation of other programs or applications running on the system. This slows the system down drastically. The system can be revamped with utilities such as Kazaa Spyware removal tool that works as well as any free Spyware removal software.

Are Spyware Removal Utilities Not Enough?
Spyware removal utilities do remove the Spyware from the system they cannot delve into the registry and remove all the entries therein. The registry will have to be scrubbed clean with Trojan and Spyware removal tools specially designed for the purpose. Many of the Spyware entries will be associated with critical system files and so the anti-Spyware program will not delete them from the registry. Only a Spyware Adware remover such as any of the free Adware Spyware removal tools will scan the registry and detect the broken links and determine it they will hamper the efficient operating of the system if they are removed. If the Adware Spyware remover decides that they can be safely removed the entries will be deleted. If the entries are left in the registry they may link up to the site where they came from initially and download the Spyware again.

"The next information revolution is well under way...It is not a revolution in technology, machinery, techniques, software, or speed. It is a revolution in CONCEPTS." (Drucker, 1998)"Corporate or organisational change". Big words, but what do they mean?Within an organisation there is a culture, sometimes good sometimes bad. Some of it is subtle, like how does an organisation and the staff adopt and use technology? This article concentrates on Technology Adoption and Change. It strikes me, having worked with computers since the early 80's and used email since the mid 80's that some people have not reached the 20th century let alone the 21st century. I liken it to a car. Most people drive a car and use all the gears; with technology most people seem to use 1st and maybe 2nd gear but do not even know that it has 1 maybe 3 more gears.Technology seems to be a big mystery still to a lot of people. Well what do we do?Technology can make an organisation and staff so much more productive; make internal and external communications so much easier and efficient. Reportingon events, finances are so much easier with the use of technology. That is, save time and money.Technology is providing a revolution in the workplace and at home. The problem is that most humans have not caught up with 10% of it yet.I have some suggestions and plans about how we can make organisation and staff much more in tune with the latest IT (Information Technology)Information Technology (IT) Plan Each organisation really needs an IT plan. What technology do you need, what training do you need, how will you implement IT across the organisation? What do you need and what can you afford, or can you not afford not to have the time and money involved? If you are still doing things manually and have a mountain of paperwork, will your organisation be around in 2 years time? Should you buy or lease some our all of your IT needs? Staff Training and awareness One critical thing I have found is that an organisation can provide the latest technology but staff need training in how to use it and on an ongoing basis. It is not good enough to have one session on some new technology and then say that is it! There seems to be some fear of IT and some reluctance to learn and adopt sometimes as well, this can be for an individual or an organisation as a whole. I believe one should use and reflect IT internally so that externally you will be seen as a user of IT. Computers and NetworksAre the computers you have adequate or should you look at an ongoing replacement plan? Should the computers be networked so you can rationalise resources like the Internet and printers, scanners etc? Are there better ways of doing what you are doing? Should you not review current policies and procedures in the light of advancing IT and adopt new methods for doing things? You could for instance abandon a lot of face-to-face meetings, paperwork etc if you adopted new technology like Web cams and an online briefcase! Common software Is the software you are using common across the organisation and is it adequate for the tasks expected, not an overkill or an underkill? Is the software legal and what is the plan to keep up to date with software and related issues? Agreed process for communication and reporting of information Does the organisation have an agreed internal and external communications and reporting procedure? And more importantly is it used every day by everybody? Training should be given to all staff on an ongoing basis as to the processes for communications and reporting. Internet The Internet is such a wonderful tool for research, communication, software, updates, ebusiness, b2b, etc, but how little it is understood and used! The Internet should be your first choice, for communication, to look up a phone number or to find software or information, the cost and speed is usually much better than by any other means. Things that should be used on the Internet;* Email* Online Banking* Organisation Website* News Groups* Briefcase* Information* Software* Support* Sales* Virtual Office Like today, I had a bid in on a LAN card, I have won the bid, contacted the seller and expect it will be at my address on my return from my current business trip. All done online and some 400 miles away from usual office. What would we do without the Internet. EmailPerhaps one of the most widely used part of the Internet is Email. But it is one of the most abused. I spend Monday mornings downloading the weekend's email; this is usually round 150 to 200 emails of which 95% is spam and or junk mail. Most un-solicited mail turns me right off in a big hurry. The other way email is abused is friends and associates sending large attachments. When I would far prefer theidea of sending me a link to the file and then I will decide whether to download it or not. Perhaps the last thing is all the viruses sent by email. Personally I do not use or recommend Outlook Express or MS Exchange as they constantly attacked with viruses.I use Incredimail from www.incredimail.com as it is fun and also recommend Foxmail, or Pegasus etc. I do not recommend Outlook Express or MS email as these are the ones attacked most often with viruses and anyway the are dumb programs. WWW: World Wide Web (or sometimes Wait)Well this is the new toy on the block, but is only a real small part of the Internet. There are other things like the newsgroups at http://groups.google.com and like ftp, try ftp://ftp.paradise.net.nz/VideoClips/ has some great movieclips, etc. However the WWW is great for getting info, buying some stuff and getting info out there! Just remember please that it and email are only 10% of what the Internet actually offers. But hey have fun out there! Security: Viirus and Firewall as well as Encryption.I use a free virus checker as I do not like Mcafee or Nortons and of course you must have a firewall to stop attacks on your computer and people looking at stuff or obtaining stuff they should not have access to. This does not stop everything so precautions are still needed. I spent several hours today tracking down and eliminating a Casino Worm, a program that was always trying to get me to enter a Casino Online. I think I probably got it from a friend and they are "a bugger" to get rid of. There is also a case for encrypting sensitive data and using the Internet as a Virtual Office, if you have the right systems and procedures in place and everybody has the skills, software and willingness to use the Internet for video conferencing, email, document sharing etc. It means that meetings can be arranged globally and time is saved to get the job done. This is at www.pgpi.org Meeting people face to face is important; but so is saving time and money. Data MiningThis is the art of collecting information you already have and now mostly on computer, to use in other ways. Perhaps list of creditors and debtors as a target market for your products and services.Or perhaps information you have collected or developed as a new and different product. Most organisations have a mountain of information and data, but do not use in different and innovate ways. Information GatheringIs similar to data mining, but is the idea of say, having a free newsletter on your website, a means of gathering nformation and potential customers. E-BusinessNowadays you just need to be part of the IT revolution whether your organisations is for profit or not.A website is a real tool to get information out there. To talk to potential and existing clients and to perhaps sell products and services as well. Knowledge ManagementThis is the idea that organisations and the staff of the organisations gather a raft of information. Not many organisations actually manage the process of storing that information and protecting the organisations from brain drain or loss.A disaster plan would identify critical areas, of data protection and backup and of human knowledge. If your main IT person leaves or departs, particularly due to some sudden event, have you captured that information? Use of Templates for common repetitive tasks see a sample at http://eastcoast.hypermart.net utor Human Element/InteractionDo the people using the technology have a say and are familiar and use the technology? Each staff member should have a clear file with printouts of flowcharts and processes for the use of IT. Each staff member should have a personal development plan particularly in the use of IT, tailored for their needs and the organisation needs.Human fear of change, of going out of ones comfort zone, of accepting life as a challenge and obstacles are things to be overcome. Some useful sites are:http://eastcoast.hypermart.net utorwww.novelty-gift.com/courses.htmlwww.yahoo.commessenger.yahoo.combriefcase.yahoo.commail.yahoo.comwww.pwcglobal.com http://www.software602.com/index.htmlwww.freewarehome.comwww.incredimail.comwww.nzenterprise.comUSE Information Technology with all the amazing powers of the web , but strive to keep your life in BALANCE.With the web and e-mail, we must always keep technology in perspective - by using it for 'ease of communication at the click of a mouse', to make our lives easier and market products and services around the globe efficiently and cheaply. MANAGE IT WELL, OR IT WILL MANAGE US in the early days of this "New Age of Wisdom"!.

Kansas City, Missouri (ContentDesk) October 19, 2005 -- Dennis Weiser announces publication of Crash Dummies in conjunction with Lulu (www.lulu.com), the worlds fastest-growing provider of print-on-demand books.Crash Dummies pokes fun at spy, romance and sci-fi-fantasy genres while exposing Americas obsessions with secrecy, seduction and sex.Dennis Weiser wrote Crash Dummies because he felt strongly that the legacy of Ronald Reagans presidency and Iran-Contra needed fumigating. He came to Lulu because he wanted to be in control of the publishing process and found Lulus print-on-demand tools to be fast, easy and, most importantly, free. Crash Dummies is available for purchase at www.lulu.com, in a marketplace filled with other unique, and sometimes, downright strange, items.Weiser states that, Writing Crash Dummies was the hard part, five years of continuous effort. As with my first novel, getting it published and printed through Lulu was a breeze.Lulu.com is the Internet version of an open-air, but underground, marketplace. Its fresh as the outdoors, but our individual thinkers, independent authors, emerging artists, digital do-it-yourselfers and the people that love them come to Lulu for more than just books as usual, said Henry Hutton, Director of Operations, Lulu. We enable access to new, unique voices and ideas, such as Dennis Weisers Crash Dummies, to an audience that demands it, all in just a few clicks. Link to Publication*: http://www.lulu.com/content/145862 About Author:Born in Philadelphia in 1951, Dennis Weiser has published poetry, stories, book reviews and articles in numerous venues.
Have you ever received a brochure or a flyer that looked expensive at first glance? And afterwards, you learned that it was rather inexpensive yet its quality is comparable to such. This instance is not new to me. I've known several printing companies that can provide you with expensive-looking printed outputs at truly affordable costs.Know what guys, I'm talking here about printing companies having 4 color printing expertise that can convert an ordinary piece of paper into a work of art. There are lots of them now because of the different printing technologies and application programs that pop out one after the other. With the recent competition among these companies, the printing prices have also become competitive, too. Who would want an expensive print if you could also have the same quality at an affordable cost?In addition, 4 color printing has never been affordable as it is now. With all the printing companies online, you can easily choose from them, ask for their printing quotes, send them your orders, and wait for the delivery of your printing jobs at the time that you need them. This is another good thing about 4 color printing ? printing experts make it sure that your orders will be delivered directly to your homes or offices without extra charges.Furthermore, the quality of your printed outputs is not compromised even if you'll be charged by these printers at a fairly low cost. If you are in need of quality brochures, flyers, press kit folders, catalogs, business cards, etc., search for printing companies online. The Internet has grown at an enormous rate in the past and it continues to grow at a fast phase these days. I must say that all the information on 4 color printing that's out there can take a long time to sift through but when you finally find the best one for you, you'll never look back.Indeed, you can now stand out in the crowd with eye-catching printed material! And, if you really want to make a big impact and a lasting good impression to your clients and competitors, look for a printing company that offers cheap 4 color printing. Aside from the fact that it takes from you the hassle of thinking about a big budget for your printing jobs, it doesn't compromise the quality of your prints even if it's price is low. Experience the wonderful world of 4 color printing at the tip of your fingers!.

312, Inc., a software development and Web services company, today announced the release of LeanOnMe, a platform independent backup and remote access solution. LeanOnMe harnesses the power of peer-to-peer (P2P) technology to provide secure off-site backup and enables the user to access his or her own information anywhere LeanOnMe is installed. The data files are encrypted and are not accessible to anyone other than the content owner. "Much like the World Wide Web or a corporate network, P2P technology is simply one type of technology solution that allows users to accomplish a variety of tasks," stated Brian Neilson, CEO of 312 Inc. "Unfortunately, like the Web, P2P technology has been used for illegal activities. However, P2P technology can also be used for legal and beneficial purposes." Neilson continued. "312's LeanOnMe does not allow sharing of illegal or copyrighted material; it's for the protection of data. The user's data is encrypted and cannot be accessed by the remote host. LeanOnMe demonstrates that the generic association of P2P technology and illegal activities is no longer valid." LeanOnMe is easy to use and backs up data files to one or more on-line computers. Users can select files or folders to protect and then choose someone to "lean on" for remote storage. This removes the need for tapes, CD's and monthly Web storage fees. Any new or updated files are automatically protected based on a user-defined backup schedule. Set it up once, like your anti-virus software, and LeanOnMe will run in the background protecting your selected files. LeanOnMe offers effortless protection with a lot more integrated functionality.Juan Carlos Soto, Sun Microsystems Director of the Software, CTO Office said: "We are thrilled to see 312's LeanOnMe product applying JXTA peer-to-peer technology to automate computer file back-up. People can now securely share computer resources in a trusted, cooperative, and highly available peer-to-peer network to back-up data. Using Java and JXTA technologies, 312 has created a platform independent, secure network backup product that works over the Internet."Create your own Web of Protection"Set it up once but don't forget it. LeanOnMe allows you to create your own group so you can invite your friends, family or colleagues to join. You can use it at home and work and never email, transfer or forget an important file again, just access it remotely," said Andrew Kiolbasa, 312, Inc. Chief Operating Officer and head of product development. "Sometimes a file is lost simply because you can't remember where you saved it. With LeanOnMe you can sort all of your protected files so you can find them quickly and easily" Kiolbasa added.Pricing and AvailabilityLeanOnMe is $50.00 with an introductory offer of a convenient 2-user license (buy 1, give 1 for free). LeanOnMe is available for immediate download at www.312inc.com. Annual maintenance agreements and corporate / government volume discounts are available.About 312, Inc.312, Inc.
There was a time when I didn't think I'd ever be a "computer" person. I was in the seventh grade, taking a class in MS-DOS and learning some program called Turtle. (I know why they called it Turtle. It was pretty darned slow.) I had to key in about 50 commands just to draw a half-inch line. I wasn't all that skilled at doing this. One little typo, and my line was going in the total wrong direction. I got a C+ in the class.Today, I'm something of an unofficial computer geek. I can pretty much learn any graphics, word processing or utilities program on the fly, and I even surprise myself with html tricks from time to time. Now for the good news: so can you. "No, I can't!" you say. YES, you CAN.Today's kids are little tech-heads. Ever seen a four-year-old grab the mouse and start web-surfing like it was nothing? It happens all the time. By age fifteen, kids are designing websites and manipulating photos like old pros. How can this be? Do they grow them smarter these days?Well, I know some parents who'll tell you so, but the truth is, today's computer programs are designed so that the average untrained human being can learn them quickly and apply them in myriad ways. We call them Applications because they're meant to be applied for practical use to enhance our quality of living.I mentioned MS-DOS in my intro. For the most part, today's user doesn't need to know a thing about MS-DOS. The reason? Modern computers run on operating systems, such as Windows for PC and OS for Mac. The operating system covers up all that wacky-looking MS-DOS code with windows and buttons that practically beg us out loud, "CLICK ME!" And click them we do.Just like the operating system, most programs use what's called an interface: that shell or skin that hides the code, and allows you to navigate and manipulate using simple clicks and commands. This interface is what enables us to just stroll on over and start making things happen on the computer without knowing a darned thing about programming or codes or much of anything. It's these windows that we can open and shut, buttons we can click, and menus we can pull down using our trusty mouse, that let us accomplish tasks of great magnitude in record time, using these powerful machines. We can do some pretty incredible things just by POINTING AND CLICKING. If you think about this long enough, it might blow your mind.Point and click. That's the basic concept of using the mouse, and it's such a simple method that 3-year-olds take to it with ease. SEE IT, GRAB IT. This is how today's computers work, in a nutshell. With this concept in mind, computer programmers did a beautiful thing for all of us humble users: they were kind enough to develop a standard method of navigating through most programs.Seek... and find. That's basically what your brain is doing as your hand points and clicks. Every time you use a program, you're searching for a word or a symbol or a button that will perform a desired action or take you to a desired destination. So, what's the big challenge? To think of the word that describes the action that you need performed. Words like... SAVE. MOVE. DELETE. CHANGE. COPY. PASTE. You know those words! And you can learn even more words, easily. Now I ask you, what could be easier than learning the very BASIC language of computer use?If you want to perform any action in any program, go to the top of the screen and read the words there. With some exceptions, most of them say things like FILE, VIEW, EDIT, FORMAT, TOOLS, HELP. If you click on each of these words in any program, they bring down a menu of more options. (I probably don't need to explain this to you, but I'm trying to make a point here.)Let's use the FILE menu as an example. We all know what's behind door number one. NEW FILE, SAVE, PRINT... damn, this is too easy isn't it. So let me now point out five more general facts about computer programs:In most word processing programs, the pulldown menus are all pretty much the same.In most illustration programs, the pulldown menus are all pretty much the same.In most utilities programs, the pulldown menus are all pretty much the same.In most photo-manipulation programs, the pulldown menus are all pretty much the same.In most Internet Browsers, the pulldown menus are all pretty much the same. Why am I taking such pains to point this out? Because I want to shed some light on a fact that's often overlooked by the skittish user. Because of the fact that most word processing menus contain identical or nearly-identical pulldown menus, if you know one word processing program, you pretty much know all of them. That goes for all of the other categories of programs as well. And even if the menus are not identical, you know the language. You'll be able to hunt for the words that perform the desired actions. At this point, I'd like to thank you for sticking through this tirade with me, so that I can make my final point:The only thing holding you back from learning new computer programs is your own closed-minded attitude. Point and click. Seek and find. There is nothing easier than this. So for anyone out there who claims that they're "just not a tecchie" and can't learn the programs: DO NOT DOUBT YOURSELF. You CAN learn the programs! If you master Photoshop, you'll be able to use any Photoshop knock-off program with relative ease. If you learn Microsoft Outlook, you should have little to no problem with other email management programs. This goes for all kinds of programs. How can you become skilled in the major categories of computer programs? Search for free, downloadable instructions on the internet, or pay a small amount for training books. Hook up with a computer-savvy friend for a little tutorial. Click the Help menu and read each topic explained. Do all this, and master programs while saving thousands on computer training classes that you don't need.Just open your mind, and you'll see what's before you; the incredible world of computers and the miraculous acts you can perform through them by your own miniscule hand. You know a lot more than you think you know. So click the mouse, and take your power.Copyright 2005 Dina Giolitto. All rights reserved..

If you plan to work at home or start your own home-based business, your home office should have some basic equipment to help you project a professional image. The proper tools will also help you stay productive, eliminating emergency trips to the office supply store.

1. First of all, you will need a desk. Your desk should have enough room for your computer and enough surface space for any writing you may need to do. If your computer desk isn't large enough, consider adding a table nearby. You will need pens, pencils, a stapler, paper clips, binders, computer paper, and a hole puncher for your desk. A small notebook for jotting down notes and reminders is also helpful.

2. Make sure that you get a comfortable chair for your desk. You may be spending a lot of time in it! Adjustable office chairs are best. That way you can raise or lower your chair according to the height of your desk.

3. A small three-drawer file cabinet will help you organize your paperwork. Get file folders and hanging file folders for your cabinet. As your business grows you can add larger file cabinets to suit your needs.

4. You will need a computer for your work at home endeavors. The amount of memory and the processing speed necessary will depend largely on the type of business or work you plan to do. Some work at home jobs list specific computer requirements. By the way, you may need to purchase a high-speed Internet connection for some jobs. If you need to buy a computer, make sure that you list your requirements and take the list with you when you go shopping. You will know what you are looking for and be in a better position to discuss your computer needs. Your computer may or may not have software installed. At the very least, you need to have good word processing software and virus protection for your computer.

5. A fax machine is also a good investment. You never know when a work at home company or a client will need you to send a hard copy document in a jiffy. Those of you who are interested in telecommuting will learn that you will need to fax tax forms and contractor agreements to companies. You can pay to fax documents through document copy centers, but that can get expensive.

6. A copier is helpful. You will have to make copies of contracts or client documents, and running to a copy center can get tedious. In fact, you can get more for your money if you obtain a copier, fax, and printer in one.

Do you need office equipment? Do you have office equipment that you would like to get rid of to make room for newer furniture or supplies? Check out the Freecycle Network (http://www.freecycle.org). It unites people who have a need for something they don't have with people who have something they don't need. This is a neat organization that helps break down communication barriers to make use of items that may otherwise end up in a landfill somewhere. Not only can you eliminate clutter to make room for your new home office, you can get good free, usable (sometimes new or lightly used) items through the Freecycle Network. There are local organizations that you can join throughout the United States and worldwide..
